The Job with Debbie Hall
Age: 52Role: Shipping Manager for Gibbons CompanyWhat is your job? I work within a team that handles all incoming shipments for Gibbons Co. We liaise with our buying and merchandise team, overseas and local freight forwarders, vendors, and Bermuda Customs to ensure all of our shipments are received in good order. We process all paperwork for our receiving area and update all paperwork for payment. What is your favourite part? I am a shopaholic, so I enjoy working on the actual container shipments, I like seeing all of the different types of merchandise on the invoices and shipping documents and deciding what I might be interested in buying, and then going to the sales floor to have a look. Some of our containers are almost all clothing so for me this is the most fun. What is your least favourite part? My least favourite part is the problem solving, when things go wrong with a shipment, if it is short, lost, damaged or just doesn't get on island and in store in time for an event is very frustrating. Thankfully, with the team we have, this very rarely happens. What is your most interesting experience at work? The opening of all of our new stores and seeing all of the merchandise coming from exotic vendors like Mango, and as far away as the Far East, I think it is amazing to see it all presented so beautifully within our little “dot” on the map. What would you be doing otherwise? I couldn't imagine NOT working in retail! Right out of school I went abroad to study retail and in just over 30 years have worked in sales, inventory, advertising, display and receiving. At this moment I feel like shipping is my “dream” job. I love riding the ferry in to work each day and I like the people I work with. When it's time to retire I would like to work again for three days in retail and have two days to do charity work, so I guess you could say if I didn't work in retail I would be working for a charity.
