THE JOB with Tarquia Lambe
Age: 28Role: Senior Shipping and Customs Administrator, Gibbons CompanyWhat is your job? My main job is to oversee all Bermuda customs declarations for goods being imported. I liaise with our shipping team, local and overseas freight forwarders, clients and vendors to ensure a steady flow of the process from importing to accounts payable. I set up new accounts and procedures with Bermuda customs and am responsible for Gibbons Company being the only company to be on duty deferral at the moment. What is your favourite part? With this type of work, it comes along with its quirks and a lot can go wrong; shipments, customs and accounts discrepancies. Investigating and problem solving will be one of my favourite parts of my job. Something needs to be researched, ask me and I’ll be happy to help. What is your least favourite part? I love to be busy, so I would say that when the slow seasons come around I find that to be my least favourite thing, … besides, that is when you have to catch up on your filing. What is your most interesting experience at work? I joined Gibbons Company as the assistant to the merchandise manager and my most interesting experience was going on buying trips for the children’s department. The experiences of working with our overseas clients, meeting new people and actually watching your merchandise arrive on the sales floor was priceless. And now, being in my current position, I have a clear understanding of how important one department’s workflow affects the next, which to me is a plus. What would you be doing otherwise? This is my 10th year at Gibbons and I have gained a good bit of experience within different departments over the years, so other than working in shipping and accounts, I would love to stay in retail while gaining more knowledge of the business, maybe the marketing and promotional side of it.
