Travel the world and you will find Bermudians living and working. Two are currently in Europe as part of RenaissanceRe’s development programme.Jevon Mills, a senior network engineer within the company’s IT department is currently on a ten-month secondment in their Dublin office.Kelly Rego, an assistant manager within the company’s Operations Department is on a nine-month secondment in London. Both are loving their experiences.“A lot of my team is based in the Dublin office so it’s been a great opportunity to work closely with my team in a different environment,” said Mr Mills, who has been with the company since he graduated university in 2004 when he secured an internship and ultimately full-time employment. “I’m also getting to do a lot of training as well for systems, networking and security certifications.”This isn’t his only time abroad though as Mr Mills said he has been to five out of six Ren Re offices over the years assisting in a variety of projects, such as office moves as well as technology maintenance and upgrades.“By encouraging us to work in our overseas offices for an extended time, we gain a great deal of experience, but we also get to help bring the culture and approach that is so strong in our Bermuda office to our overseas teams, and share our knowledge too,” he added. While he is away, he speaks with his Bermuda-based team members several times a day over video chat, including Ayana Wolfe and Ashleigh Aldred, both Bermudian service desk analysts.“Jevon’s secondment is actually helping the entire team because as he learns, he takes on more and drops off new tasks for me to learn and I drop off new tasks for Ashleigh to learn,” explained Ms Wolfe, who has been with RenaissanceRe since 2009. “His venture is not only helping him, but helping everyone else as well.”Ms Rego, who is in London, has been with RenaissanceRe for six years in the company’s Operations Department, where she assists underwriters in reviewing their contracts and helping with processing submissions for cash and claims.Ms Rego has completed her CPCU and ARE designations, both of which were paid for by RenaissanceRe. The company also gives out cash rewards when someone successfully completes a professional designation.“There’s a culture of wanting to see young people thrive,” she said.Among the offices of RenaissanceRe, there are various focuses and protocols. In London where she is working within the world of Lloyd’s, Ms Rego has found a whole different approach to her job.“There are different business processes in London,” she said via video chat in London. “It’s a different platform with Lloyd’s of London. In Bermuda we are more focused on paper and here it is more electronic. And I am bringing some of those ideas back to Bermuda and we are now eliminating some of our paper processes to become more streamlined with London.“For anyone in the insurance industry, it’s good to go to Lloyd’s because you learn where the insurance industry originated.”During her time in London, she has even been able to attend some Olympic events, including cycling and the marathon.Mr Mills didn’t get to go to the Olympics but he did manage to make it over to London for a couple football matches and he plans on seeing his team, Chelsea, play again during his remaining time abroad.Back in Bermuda, both Ms Wolfe and Aldred were recently sent to Dublin and London for a week in April.Ashleigh and Ayana spent a week in Dublin and London in April where they visited the IT teams there and attended two technology conventions.“It was an eye opener and when we came back we did a presentation for the office and they were amazed at all we had learned,” said Ms Wolfe. “When you are physically there, the knowledge transfer is so much greater.”“RenRe is so good at pushing us to develop,” added Ms Aldred, who joined the firm in 2010. “It’s not just going to different offices, here in the Bermuda office our internal team pushes us to develop.”The cross-office secondments are integral at RenaissanceRe for reasons including relationship-building, improved business understanding, and communication strengthening. The young Bermudian employees have been reaping the benefits.“I would describe RenRe as very nurturing from the moment a new person fresh out of college walks in the door, they are assisted to develop their skills,” said Ms Rego. “You can grow immensely through RenRe.”

Their advice for young Bermudians

Jevon Mills: “Whatever industry you get into, you have to be excited about it. You can’t just want to do something because you heard it was the cool thing to do. If you show passion, then your employer will see it. Things will flow from there.”

Kelly Rego: “Putting yourself out there and networking is very important. I understand the job market is very difficult right now so do your research and persevere.”

Ashleigh Aldred: “Be determined in what you want to do. Don’t follow what’s popular at the time, have the passion and drive for it.”

Ayanna Wolfe: “It’s never too early to focus on what you want to do and take steps to get there. Do your research to set yourself up and show initiative.”
