Ward ready to go the distance with Perozzi

April Ward

April Ward has wasted no time sizing up the opponent she will face in the most important fight of her pro career to date. The orthodox female boxer is poised to lock horns with Bermuda’s Teresa Perozzi for the WBA middleweight belt during Teachers Rugby Football Club (TRFC) Fight Night at Berkeley Institute School Gym March 10.Ward and manager/co- trainer Brandon Foster have already begun the process of running the rule over Perozzi’s technique and forming what they hope will be a winning formula for the American boxer.“We’ve watched parts of three of Teresa Perozzi’s fights so April knows what she’s up against,” Foster told The Royal Gazette. “April is up against a really strong and good puncher but we are going to come in our best shape and do the best we can.“We are getting prepared right now so we are working out a lot harder than we have for any other fights. We want to prepare to go ten rounds and so April is going to be in really good shape.”Ward, who prevailed in her last fight against Lucretia Meacham in her native Arkansas last December, is moving up from the light middleweight division to have a shot at Perozzi’s WBA middleweight belt.Very little separates the two combatants on paper as far as their pro records are concerned. Perozzi’s stands at 8-4-1 compared to Ward’s nearly identical record of 8-4-0.Ward has a height and reach advantage over Perozzi but will still go into the fight as the proverbial underdog.Next month’s WBA middleweight title fight will consist of ten, two-minute rounds and will mark the first time Ward has fought outside of her homeland.Perozzi will have the psychological advantage of fighting in front of the home fans. But Foster isn’t too bothered by that.“We are not concerned about the support Teresa has behind her,” he said. “We are just concerned about April putting on the best performance she can.“This is by far April’s biggest fight. We have primarily fought in the southeast part of the States and she’s pretty much fought everybody that we can here. So I think this is a great opportunity for her.”Mother of one Perozzi landed the WBA middleweight belt via a split decision win against American Lorissa Rivas at the Woodbrook Youth Academy in Trinidad and Tobago last December.Perozzi, who won the title on the eve of her 38th birthday, is taking her own preparations all in stride.“I know what I need to do physically and mentally to be ready to fight,” she said. The WBA middleweight champ said she intends to prepare for her upcoming title defence as she would for any other fight.“What I do each time seems to work and so I’m just trying to stay with the people I’m used to being with and doing my similar routine,” she said.A successful title defence against Ward could earn Perozzi a shot at Lori Nelson’s WBC middleweight belt.Starting from today tickets for next month’s TRFC Fight Night will be available at ptix.bm, International Sports Shop and The Pro Shop.
