Bascome’s bout thrown into doubt
Outspoken trainer Allen (Forty) Rego has threatened to withdraw his fighter Nikki Bascome from tonight’s exhibition bout with Canadian Justin Garant. The local junior middleweight is scheduled to fight Garant on the undercard of tonight’s ‘All or Nothing’ WBC & WBA middleweight unification championship bout at Fairmont Southampton. However, on the eve of the fight Rego expressed grave concern about the vast weight difference between the two fighters and vowed to withdraw his fighter if he feels his inferior weight will put him at a disadvantage in the ring.“This guy came down here to fight somebody who weighs 175-180 pounds so he outweighs Nikki by 20lbs,” the veteran trainer said. “I’m not about to let Nikki go in there with nobody that outweighs him by 20lbs and someone that can box and hit him and hurt him because I have somewhere for him to go.“It’s supposed to be an exhibition but you have to be cautious when you do things like that and if this guy doesn’t meet my approval Nikki is not going to fight. And it doesn’t matter what the promoter says because I have brought Nikki this far and he hasn’t lost anything and he’s moving along good.”Bascome and Garant are due to be weighed today.Garant was originally due to face Bermuda’s Chris Wilson who withdrew at the 11th hour through injury. After learning of his compatriot’s withdrawal, Dynamic Fighting Championship Junior Middleweight champ Bascome jumped at the opportunity to showcase his skills before thehome crowd.“I was the one who asked to fight,” he said. “I’m fit and feel like I’m ready and need the experience.“I don’t know nothing about my opponent other than he’s heavier than me.”Should the exhibition fight go ahead as originally planned, it will mark Bascome’s fourth fight on home turf.“I’m excited to be fighting in front of the home crowd ... I just can’t get caught up in the crowd,” he said. “I have to do a job so I want to do what I was taught and just go out there and do my best.“I’m very confident and I’m going to trust in my training ... that’s all I can do. I just know that when I go out there all I have to do is what I’m told.”Bascome’s amateur record stands at a perfect 9-0.The local junior middleweight captured the Dynamic Fighting Championship Junior Middleweight belt after prevailing against Kirt Alphonso via a unanimous decision in Florida last August.
