Perozzi out to end Nelson’s unbeaten record
WBA middleweight champ Teresa Perozzi is seeking to go where no other boxer has boldly gone before. The local southpaw will bid to inflict a first defeat upon American Tori Nelson when the two rivals lock horns in tonight’s ‘All of Nothing’ WBC & WBA middleweight unification championship bout at Fairmont Southampton.Perozzi has trained extremely hard for the fight and is determined to ruin Nelson’s unblemished 6-0-1 record.“Records don’t mean anything to me and I would love to be the first to beat her, that’s the goal,” declared Perozzi, whose own record stands at 9-4-1. “I’ve trained really hard so I’m pumped up. I’ve trained with all men so now I’m ready to get in the ring with a woman.”Perozzi, who weighed in at 157lbs at yesterday’s official weigh-in, has urged her supporters to “bring the noise” to help her overcome her latest challenge in the ring.“I want a lot of noise and I know it’s going to be great energy and even better than last time (Teacher’s Fight Night) so I’m looking forward to it,” she said.Nelson is currently the top ranked boxer in her division in the United States and a multiple Maryland/Washington DC Golden Gloves champion.“She looks like a tough girl, so she’s going to come and bring it,” Perozzi said. “But I’ve trained hard and looking forward to it.”Nelson weighed in at 156 and a quarter pounds, slightly lighter then her rival.“I wanted to come in a lot heavier,” she said. “But it doesn’t matter because I will fight her at any weight.”The orthodox fighter is confident she can conquer Perozzi who she claims will have to cope with the added pressure of living up to the expectations of the home crowd.“The pressure is really on her because this is her country and she don’t want to let them down,” she said. “I just came to take the belt, keep my record and go home. She has a lot to prove.”The three knock-down rule will not be in effect in tonight’s WBC & WBA middleweight unification championship bout that can only be stopped by the referee. The standing eight count will also not be implemented. In the event an intentional foul causes an injury and the injury is severe enough to terminate the bout immediately the boxer causing the injury shall loose by disqualification. If an accidental foul causes an injury severe enough for the referee to stop the bout immediately the bout will result in a no contest if stopped before four completed rounds. But, should an accidental foul cause an injury severe enough for the referee to stop the bout immediately after four rounds have been completed, the bout will result in a technical decision awarded to the boxer who was ahead on the scorecards at the time the fight was stopped.Partial rounds will be scored.Tonight’s WBC& WBA unification middleweight unification championship bout is being co-sanctioned by the World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council and Bermuda Boxing Council.Well-respected referee Steve Smoger (USA) will officiate in the ring while the ringside judges panel consists of Lynn Carter (USA), Vic Richmond (Bermuda) and Claude Paquette (Canada).Kenny Simmons (Bermuda) and Craig Morfitt (Bermuda) are the official time keepers while Dr Angela Marini (Bermuda) is the chief doctor in attendance.
