Darrell backing Bascome to retain title
Boxing legend Troy Darrell is confident promising junior middleweight Nikki Bascome can defend his Dynamic Fighting Championships (DFC) title in Orlando, Florida tomorrow. The orthodox fighter, who boasts an unblemished 9-0 record, is scheduled to fight American challenger Tyrone Walker in the main event of the ‘Rumble on I- Drive 15 Masquerade Edition’ .The three-round championship bout will be held at the International Palms Resort & Conference Centre.Commenting on tomorrow’s title fight, Darrell said: “If Nikki remains positive and stays focused then I think he can do the job and successfully defend his title.“Nikki is pretty eager to go and he just has to hang in there and think positive.”Darrell, who has helped Bascome prepare for his next fight, has done his homework on Walker who boasts a 10-2 record.“I looked at the guy on YouTube and he looked like a show boat,” the former professional middleweight said.Bascome, who plans to turn pro in the not-too-distant future, impressed in an exhibition match with Canadian Justin Garant on the undercard of this month’s ‘All or Nothing’ WBC & WBA unification championship bout at Fairmont Southampton.“Nikki looked like he was just warming up,” said Bascome’s sparring partner Teresa Perozzi, the reigning WBA middleweight champ. “He looked very composed putting together all his combinations and everything he’s been learning.“Nikki is very focused and determined and really wants to go far in boxing — and I see him going far.”Like Darrell, southpaw Perozzi is confident Bascome can retain his title in Orlando.“I feel really good about his chances of defending his title,” she said. “He trains very hard and I love his work ethic.“Every time he fights his confidence just seems to grow. And boxing is not just all about training . . . it’s also about confidence.”Darrell is also impressed by Bascome’s hard work ethic towards training.“Nikki trains hard and there’s no one else in boxing in Bermuda in better shape than him,” he said. “Nikki works out all year round and is always in great shape.”Bascome, 21, arrived in Florida earlier this week with trainer Allen (Forty) Rego to step up preparations for his title defence. The former Platinum Gloves and Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic gold medallist captured the DNF international junior middleweight crown after scoring a points win against American Kirt Alphonso in Orlando last summer.Fight promoter Robert Rene predicts tomorrow’s championship bout will live up to expectations.“Nikki is an excellent boxer; he’s very cautious, concerted with his power and his punches and he doesn’t waste any shots,” he said. “Tyrone Walker is more of a puncher/boxer and I think what’s going to happen at some point is he’s going to attack Nikki.“I see him coming to bring the fight to Nikki with power so I think what we have here is the boxer versus the puncher.”
