Bascome’s fight called off after weight row
Nikki Bascome’s Dynamic Fighting Championships (DFC) middleweight title bout with Tyrone Walker in Florida at the weekend was called off under controversial circumstances.Bascome’s trainer, Allen (Forty) Rego, withdrew his fighter from the three-round bout after raising concerns about his American rival’s weight.“Every time we’ve fought we have been 149lbs and this guy (Walker) is coming in 157-158lbs which is unfair to Nikki,” Rego told The Royal Gazette. “If Nikki can make the weight why can’t his opponent make weight?”Rego also took issue with fight promoter Robert Rene for having Bascome defend his DFC junior middleweight belt in another weight class.“This guy (Rene) had us in the wrong weight class,” he said. “He had us as middleweight and Nikki has never been a middleweight in his life.“I would’ve had to stop training Nikki for four days and feed him a lot of junk to get him up to 155lbs.”Fight promoter Rene could not be reached for comment yesterday.Rego also decided best not to allow his fighter to step into the ring because of a lack of proper sparring in the final lead-up to Saturday’s ‘Rumble on I-Drive 15’ middleweight title fight at the International Palms Resort & Conference Centre in Orlando.“If it’s not right, we don’t fight,” he said. “We only had two days to spar and that’s not enough time I generally have 12 days of sparring.”Saturday’s middleweight title bout involving Bascome and Walker was supposed to be the main event on the night.Bascome, 21, won the junior middleweight title via a points win against American Kirt Alphonso in Orlando last August to improve his unblemished amateur record to 9-0.The Platinum Gloves and Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic gold medallist warmed up for his title defence with an exhibition bout against Canadian Justin Garant during this month’s ‘All or Nothing’ WBC & WBA middleweight unification championship at Fairmont Southampton.Rego threatened to withdraw his fighter from the bout after also raising concerns over Garant’s weight. But the bout went ahead as planned after both boxers agreed to fight with training gloves.Bascome, who fights orthodox, has ruled out trying to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in favour of turning pro in the not-too-distant future.
