Hill’s medal win warrants more than a statue, says Rego

Alan (Forty) Rego

Olympic medallist Clarence Hill deserves more than a statue for his unprecedented feat at the 1976 Montreal Games. That’s the opinion of former boxer and veteran trainer Allen (Forty) Rego who applauds Government’s intention to erect a bronze statue in Hill’s honour but feels his Olympic medal winning display warrants further reward. He said: “I feel that Clarence should not have to worry about how he’s going to be buried and something should be put in place where he could be taken care of for sickness, dental and anything like that.”Rego believes that Hill should also be afforded accommodation.“Clarence could be given a house which doesn’t have to be a hotel,” he said. “It could be a little comfortable place for him and his family that he could pay a very small rent to go towards paying this place off. This place should be his and he should never have to worry about being put out or anything like that.”Hill believes his unprecedented feat also warrants more recognition.“A statue is all good but it can’t feed my family,” he said. “I’m cleaning cars right now which brings home a few dollars here and there but it’s still not enough to take care of the family.“It’s a good gesture that they (Government) are making and I think it’s well overdue. But usually in other countries when an athlete wins an Olympic medal they get land, houses or financial reward.“I am the first person to win an Olympic medal for my country and still the only one person to win an Olympic medal. That was in 1976 and look at how long it’s taking them (Government) to recognise me with a bronze statue.”Earlier this week Hill said the money Government intend to use to erect a statute in his honour could be better spent on a boxing gym to help groom future generations.Rego agrees.“What Clarence is saying is true and it would be a good thing if they (Government) were to build a boxing facility,” he said. “If they want to erect a statue then that’s okay. But I think a facility for boxing only would be better.”Government’s plans to erect a statue has sparked controversy because of Hill’s past criminal record and drug addiction. However, Rego believes that Hill’s previous run ins with the law and bout with drug addiction might have been avoided had he received the proper recognition for his Olympic medal winning exploits more than three decades ago.“Clarence won a bronze medal but the people that were responsible for him and in position to do something did not nothing,” he said. “He should have been treated with respect but they didn’t even meet him at the airport.”
