Perozzi and Nelson in line for rematch

Bermuda's

Teresa Perozzi and Tori Nelson could possibly face off in a rematch early in the New Year, The Royal Gazette can reveal.According to reliable sources, both fighters are currently engaged in discussions that could culminate with a title fight for the vacant WBC belt as early as next January. Both camps are said to be ironing out potential venues for the championship bout, purse, sponsorship, officials and a proposed date which is believed to be in late January 2013.It is understood that Perozzi’s WBA belt will not be up for grabs should the fight come to fruition. However, sources said the local southpaw still risks relinquishing her title if she was to lose against her unbeaten American rival in a showdown for the vacant WBC belt.It remains unclear if orthodox fighter Nelson would be forced to surrender her WIBA belt should she lose to her Bermudian rival in a potential rematch.Perozzi (8-4-2) and Nelson (6-0-2) battled to a majority draw during last month’s ‘All or Nothing’ WBC & WBA middleweight unification championship bout at a packed Fairmont Southampton.Judges Lynn Carter (USA) and Claude Paquette (Canada) both scored the fight 95-95 while local judge Vic Richmond scored it 98-93 in Perozzi’s favour. After slugging it out for ten bruising rounds both fighters claimed victory when the dust had settled.“I definitely feel I won the fight,” Perozzi declared. “I was certainly the better boxer.”Nelson disagreed.“I thought I had it won but obviously the judges thought otherwise,” she said. The outcome enabled Perozzi to retain the WBA belt while the WBC belt, once held by Nelson, remains up for grabs.Nikki Bascome has been “allowed” to defend his Dynamic Fighting Championship (DFC) junior middleweight belt in Orlando, Florida next January. The Bermudian boxer was due to defend his title against Tyrone Walker in Orlando last month. However, the championship fight was called off after Bascome’s trainer Allen (Forty) Rego withdrew his fighter after raising concerns over his American rival’s weight.Bascome has now being granted another chance to defend his title.“Our organisation is prepared to allow Nikki to defend his title in Orlando on January 26, 2013,” DFC Director of Sports Archie Keaton said. “We welcome coach Rego’s pre-matching expertise in finding a perfect match for his athlete and suggest giving the Canadian fighter (Justin Garant) a rematch in Orlando from his previous exhibition in Bermuda.”Bascome and Garant fought in a three-round exhibition fight on the undercard of last month’s ‘All or Nothing’ WBC & WBA middleweight unification championship bout at Fairmont Southampton.Rego, who threatened to pull his fighter out of the bout after raising concerns about Garant’s weight, could not be reached for comment.Platinum Gloves and Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic gold medallist Bascome won the DFC junior middleweight title via a points win against American Kirt Alphonso in Orlando last August. His unblemished amateur record stands at 9-0.
