Are Perozzi and Nelson set for threequel?
Teachers Rugby Fight Night organisers have not ruled out the possibility of staging another rematch on local turf between Bermuda’s Teresa Perozzi and American Tori Nelson for the vacant WBC world middleweight championship. The first rematch between the two highly ranked boxers at Berkeley Institute on Saturday night ended in a draw, much to the disapproval of many. And whether or not local fight fans will get to see another rematch here will ultimately depend on what terms both camps agree to if they agree to anything at all.“It could be here but I don't know what's going to happen,” an event spokesperson said. “It’s early days so we have to talk about it and see what the next move is.“I think Tori’s camp is interested and Teresa's camp is interested and you have to remember the options are very limited in their weight class.”Following Saturday night’s absorbing slugfest, Perozzi seemed reluctant to commit to another rematch with the unbeaten Nelson.“I think I did enough to win again and I think we need to move on really,” she said.Nelson welcomed a rematch but only on condition it be held in the United States.“I love here but I don’t think I want to leave my kids to keep coming out here for this (draw),” she said. “I would love for her to come back to the States.”Asked would she be willing to fight Nelson on US soil should another rematch come to fruition, Perozzi replied: “I’d totally go over there.”Perozzi (9-4-3) and Nelson (6-0-3) are both due to defend their WBA and WIBA middleweight titles early this year.Nelson will face challenger Maria Lindberg in Washington on March 30 while Perozzi has to defend her title by April but could request an extension if she can’t find a suitable opponent. The first WBC world middleweight championship bout between Perozzi and Nelson ended in a draw at Fairmont Southampton last October where the former’s WBA title was also up for grabs.Perozzi’s WBA belt and Nelson’s WIBA title were not on the line during Saturday’s ten round championship bout.
