Cousins Jermal and Sentwali Woolridge came away with medals at the seventh Sanda World Cup that concluded in Jakarta, Indonesia, today.

Jermal, the elder of the two relatives, won the bronze and $500 in prize earnings in the 90kg plus weight class, while Sentwali claimed silver and pocketed $1,000 in the 70kg division.

The two Bermudians were guaranteed a medal as there were only three competitors in their respective divisions.

Jermal lost both of his matches against Omar Mamdouh, of Egypt, and Mostafa Khalatbari, of Iran, winning just one round in the process.

Sentwali gave himself a shot at the gold medal after recording a technical knockout against the highly ranked Achraf Haddadi, of Tunisia, in his opening match before suffering a 2-0 defeat against Li Shen, of China, in his final match.

Commenting on the two fighter’s performances, Garon Wilkinson, the Bermuda coach, said: “The Sanda World Cup features the best of the best, so the quality of competition is incredible.

“To have Sentwali beat the number three ranked 70kg fighter in the world is a huge accomplishment and a great confidence builder for next year’s World Wushu Championships in Jakarta.”
