Tipping the scales: Andre Lambe goes on the scale for his fight against Sergio García Herrera (Photograph by Akil Simmons)

Andre Lambe and Mexican opponent Sergio García Herrera were promising fireworks as they both made the weight for tonight’s American Boxing Organisation regional welterweight title fight.

At the weigh-in last night, Lambe tipped the scales at 146lb, while the higher-ranked García weighed in at 146.8lb for the bout at the Epic Entertainment Fight Night Champion event at The Shed, Dockyard.

The last time Lambe fought at home in May, he was overweight for the bout with Filipino Ronniel Tabayag. His weight at that time was 153lb but the fight proceeded and Lambe stopped his opponent in the third round.

The Mexican is repeating that he aims to stop Lambe before the sixth round, but the Bermudian also fancies finishing the bout early, setting the stage for an exhilarating contest.

Lambe, probably facing his biggest challenge since he made his professional debut in 2020, heads into the fight with an unblemished record of nine wins and no defeats, while Herrera, 26, has seven victories and two losses.

“As you can see, I've been training hard,’’ Lambe said.

“I came in on weight, it’s been a long time since I made weight. I made it way easily this time. We’ll see how my hard work pays off tomorrow.

“Usually, I’m like training the whole day trying to get down the weight, but I've been relaxed the whole day just staying home. It’s been a good training camp.

“He is going for a knockout? I'm going for a knockout, too, so somebody’s getting knocked out.”

Things got a little heated when Bermuda’s top amateur Adrian Roach and his opponent, Luis Portillo of the United States were paraded at the weigh-in. They almost had a full-on brawl before the small crowd, which could make for a good curtain-raiser before the headline fight.

Portillo, 18, is one of the three young American boxers taking to the ring in the fights lined up before headliners Lambe and Herrera.

Hicham Cruz and Luis Carranza are the other up-and-coming US boxers brought by their trainer Ron Pisano, who faces Bermuda’s former heavyweight Leo Richardson in an exhibition fight.

Cruz squares up against Ethan Daniels, while Bruce Perinchief is Carranza’s opponent.

Teiko Furbert, of Epic Entertainment, promised another memorable night for the island’s boxing fans in what is most likely the last event of the year.

“They can expect a great night out, an epic event as usual,’’ Furbert said.

“We’re trying to raise the bar each event we do and we look forward to having Bermuda at its best, representing Bermuda, entertaining and hosting our foreign guests as well.

“It’s possible this is the last one for the year. You never know, after this one, we’ll have a post-meeting and we go from there, so we want to make it a lasting experience and try to make it better.”
