Andre Lambe overcomes Sergio García to retain welterweight title
A majority decision saw Andre Lambe overcome higher-ranked Mexican Sergio García Herrera to defend his American Boxing Organisation welterweight title at The Shed in Dockyard.
Zenji Ingham had the two fighters even at 57-57, however, Troy Simons scored the Epic Entertainment Fight Night Champion’s headline bout 58-56 in favour of Lambe while the Bermudian also got the nod from Shawn Simmons at 58-56 to ultimately prevail.
The win ensured Lambe extends his flawless record among the professional ranks to ten victories.
For García, who came into the fight some 400 places above Lambe, it was his third loss.
Lambe and García had promised fireworks, and so it proved for the crowd with some exceptional boxing throughout the six rounds.
Lambe was on top for the better part of the bout, but the Mexican came through with some heavy blows in the fifth round.
The last round was also evenly fought, but the Bermudian’s display in the earlier rounds carried him through.
“This was definitely my hardest fight to date,” said Lambe who opened a cut above his opponent’s right eye in the second round.
“I came into the fight with bruised ribs, he hit me there a few times and I really felt it. I had to fight through that.
“Other than that, it was a good fight. He’s ranked 400 places above me, so I am glad I could show my skill.
“He didn't catch me like completely. It wasn't like a tornado, but he was throwing a lot.
“I felt like I was already up four rounds. I just let him burn his energy, and then I came out and finished strongly in the last round.
“I didn’t agree with one of the judges who said the fight was even.
I thought the fight was four rounds to two.
“He’s definitely smart. I could feel him trying to set up stuff, but I’m a smart fighter, too.
“He hits hard and as you see, I hit hard as well.
“I think I had two knockdowns that the referee didn’t score.
“Those should have been knockdowns. I hit him clean and he touched the canvas. It shows that I still hit hard.
“Before the fight he said I’d never fought someone of his level, but like I said, I’ve a different level, I think I showed that tonight.
“I showed that I’m a true champion, and that I can be a champion. Hopefully, I can start getting some bigger opportunities to fight for more world titles and higher-calibre belts like that.”
Seeing how he managed to fight his way back into the fight in the final two rounds, García is itching for a rematch.
“A rematch with eight rounds would be good, I need two more rounds,’’ García said.
“In an eight-round fight, I can take him out. Two more rounds I would have won this fight, so anything, eight or ten rounds for the rematch. If they invite me, I’ll come for sure.
“The cut above the eye didn’t affect me at all. I’m used to fighting under pressure, so it’s nothing knew to me.”
Lambe, most likely to have fought for the last time this year, is contemplating going down a weight division as he plots his next fight.
“I’m not even a 147-pound fighter, so we’re working on going down to super-lightweight at 140,” he added. “I think that’s going to be my next step.”
“I’m going to sit down with my team and plan what’s next.
“Outside of that, I want to work on doing some fundraisers and get in a position to give back to the community.
“That’s next on my agenda but we’re definitely not going to take long, I’ll be looking for a fight pretty soon.”
