Tyler Christopher ready for title eliminators after latest victory

Tyler Christopher after his victory in Birmingham

Tyler Christopher is on the hunt for titles after he extended his unblemished professional record to nine wins last weekend.

Christopher defeated Serge Ambomo on points in the main event at the Holiday Inn in Birmingham, England, and kept his composure against his shorter, powerful opponent refusing to get drawn into a toe-to-toe brawl.

Instead, Christopher evaded the 37-year-old Cameroonian (9-39-3) while delivering measured scoring shots in the four-round bout on his way to seal a 40-37 decision from the judges. With the very real possibility of losing his flawless record, it was a tactic that Christopher was adamant had to be employed in order to safeguard his prospects in the professional ranks.

"It was a nice and controlled victory," said the 27-year-old Bermudian. "It was a bit like a bull-and-matador situation, so I had to go through that routine and stick to the game plan.

"I knew he was a very tough opponent and so I had to evade him using my footwork and then pick my moments when I could.

"When he did get in close, I clinched when I had to because I was aware of the strength of his punches and so I didn't want to get drawn into anything crazy.

"He's known to have caused some upsets against up-and-coming prospects and with his experience I knew if he sensed any weakness he would have taken advantage.

"It was about not taking any unnecessary risks and doing what I had to because I have to think about my career going forward.

"I'm really happy to have taken my record to 9-0 and hopefully there will be some bigger things to come."

With another win under his belt and his burgeoning reputation growing, Christopher is setting his sights not only on challenging for an English title eliminator, but gaining greater recognition from a televised bout.

"My manager thinks I'm ready to make a step towards an English title eliminator," he added.

"I definitely want to go down that route, but I'd also love to have some televised fights. I think I'm born to be televised with the way I fight and my personality.

"It can be a little difficult to grow your fanbase and so I want to be part of those fights where people can see what I'm about.

"I'm ready to go again, but I know I have to wait for the right next opportunity.

“I’m ambitious, but right now I’m also pleased with my progression and just feel grateful that I get to do what I love every day and be in the position that I’m in.”
