Disbelief all round as Cole Durham denied worthy victory in Aruba
Cole Durham was left in disbelief after his bout at the World Kickboxing Association’s Aruba v Colombia Card on Saturday night ended in a draw.
Fighting in Aruba, the Bermudian orthodox fighter felt he dominated home town rival Arvin Solognier in the three-round 75-80 kg amateur bout, but the judges felt differently.
“I feel that Cole completely dominated the fight and should have won,” Durham’s trainer and Bermuda Sanshou Association president Garon Wilkinson told The Royal Gazette.
“He bloodied his opponent badly, shut down his arm, his opponent hit the canvas once and they called it a draw.
“I don’t agree and nothing in the fight suggested it should have ended in a draw. Cole completely dominated his fight.”
Also flying Bermuda’s banner at the event was Cole’s twin brother Che, who lost an evenly fought 72kg contest against Curacao’s Jady Gogulski via a split decision.
“I thought Che did very well,” Wilkinson said.
“I knew it was going to be a very close fight. It was technical, a split fight and I wasn’t upset with that decision at all.
“It is only his second boxing bout and he made some errors that I think if he avoided may have pushed the decision in the other direction, but it was a split and he fought really well.”
Both fighters used the event as a warm up for the 14th Pan American Wushu Championships taking place in Santa Clara, California, from August 29 to September 2.
“Those guys both did very well and I am pleased,” Wilkinson said.
“It’s great preparation for the upcoming Pan American Wushu Championships, so mission accomplished and I am very pleased.
“Those guys are in great shape and it was a good opportunity for me to see them in action four weeks out from the Pan American Wushu Championships.”
