Adrian Roach to face Canada’s No 1 after victory
Adrian Roach avenged his defeat by Josh Melvin by winning by unanimous decision in the Brampton Cup quarter-finals on Friday.
Roach lost to the Canadian in the semi-finals of the country’ largest and longest-running Olympic-style boxing tournament last year, but things went the Bermudian's way this time around.
His 27th career victory saw him set up a semi-final battle today with Kuwardeep Manu, Canada’s No 1 boxer, in the super welterweight division.
“I give all thanks to God first and foremost, and my team for rallying behind me today,” the 22-year-old told The Royal Gazette after his victory in Ontario.
“I felt good in the ring today, controlled the fight using my jab and counter punches. I definitely stuck to the game plan and had a great support system around me today.
“I shut down his attacks by smothering his punches then attacking the body to slow him down a bit. I felt confident once the match concluded that I’d be declared the winner.
“I feel good, but I’m not satisfied yet. I came to the tournament to win gold and I have a tough assignment in front of me on Saturday.
“I got the No 2 ranked fighter out of the way, now I have my sights set on the No 1 ranked in the country in the semi-finals on Saturday.”
