Registrar General confirms receipt of BIU accounts to 2009

Registrar General Marlene Christopher confirmed Bermuda Industrial Union has filed seven of its overdue accounts.Ms Christopher is now assessing the documents and said they will soon be ready for public consumption.BIU president Chris Furbert has previously stated the union is in good financial shape after submitting its accounts for 2003 to 2009 on Thursday last week. For several months, the union has faced sustained criticism that its failure to submit the documents, which it is supposed to do annually according to the Trade Union Act 1965, had left members in the dark about its financial position.Returning to her office this week, Ms Christopher told The Royal Gazette: “I can confirm that the BIU has submitted their accounts for 2003 to 2009.“However, I am in the process of checking them off and will let you know when they are available for public inspection.”Former One Bermuda Alliance chairman Michael Fahy has claimed union members have approached him saying they are worried there might not be enough cash in BIU coffers to support them in the case of strike action this summer.Mr Furbert has said a number of factors, including the failure of the union’s computer system, caused a delay in submitting the accounts from 2003 to 2009.The union has previously filed its accounts for 1999 to 2002, but they have been rejected for being statutorily insufficient.Useful websites: www.biu.bm
