Covid-19: Foggo addresses employment concerns
The Government is to help workers laid off in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the labour minister has said.
Lovitta Foggo said: “The Government of Bermuda understands the financial position of employers as it relates to the continued operation and profitability of their businesses during this time.”
She added that she would “provide further information and instruction” today on how the Government will assist affected staff.
Ms Foggo said that the ministry had recently handled a number of concerns from employers, workers and residents over layoffs, temporary work stoppages and pay deductions, as a result of this coronavirus outbreak crisis.
She added: “However, in light of this unfortunate event, I am encouraging employers and workers to contact the labour relations section now for advice and guidance on how best to move forward while remaining compliant with the Employment Act 2000.
“The Labour Relations section provides information to employers and workers, on an anonymous basis in accordance with the Employment Act 2000 and various labour legislation.”
Ms Foggo said the section would remain open during normal business hours but “will not be accepting clients in person”.
A labour relations official will take questions by phone, Monday to Friday from 8.45am to 5pm on 707-1593, 707-5444 and 707-5437.
