Public invited to pose Pre-Budget Report questions
A live discussion online today will give the public an opportunity to ask “last-minute questions” and share views on the Pre-Budget Report released last month.
David Burt will join the live, hour-long discussion on Facebook from 6pm to 7pm, hosted by government backbencher Jaché Adams.
The Premier will deliver an overview of Bermuda’s fiscal condition and encourage community input.
Mr Burt called the publishing of the Pre-Budget Report a key step in the Budget process.
“This report provides the public with a better understanding of our fiscal aims and objectives, an update on our economy, a summary of the policies under consideration and solicits feedback,” he added.
“Bermuda’s economy is extremely vulnerable to external events, underlining the need for financial and fiscal prudence.”
Wednesday marks the deadline for feedback and submissions on the report.
The Premier said the live discussion would be included in consultation.
He called it “vital” for citizens to be aware of factors influencing the government’s fiscal decisions.
Mr Burt said that in preliminary discussions with key groups, some policy initiatives were suggested, which were included in the report for the public’s feedback:
• Amendments to the existing New Hire Relief, set to expire this year
• Possible increased licensing fees for large pleasure craft
• Further reduction of the employer payroll tax for the hospitality industry
• Cutting immigration fees for work-permit applications
• Reducing land tax
• Broadening the list of items subject to customs duty relief
Public feedback can be e-mailed to openbudget@gov.bm.
