Parole violator locked up for 18 months

A 20-year-old habitual thief who ignored his parole was yesterday jailed for 18 months.Ajani Albouy Lovell told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner: “I won’t sugarcoat anything I’ve done. What I did was wrong. I’m not a bad person, I just made bad choices.”The Cobbs Hill Road, Warwick resident said he had been looking for work but had no choice but to steal. “I can’t even feed myself,” he told the court.Mr Warner noted that Lovell had appeared before Magistrates’ Court on December 11, 2009, charged with robbery. He was then handed an 18-month suspended sentence with three years’ probation and ordered to complete 150 hours’ community service. Lovell was fined $500 on February 2 for stealing an iPod from the mother of a friend while visiting their home in Southampton. His term of probation was extended for a further two years because of that offence. He was then arrested on February 12 for stealing a BlackBerry phone from the car of someone who had offered him a lift.Yesterday, the woman whose iPod had been stolen told Mr Warner that she wanted to try and help Lovell. She said he had missed probation, in part, because he was “unable to talk” to his probation officer. “You’re not listening,” Mr Warner replied, telling her Lovell had failed to comply with probation.“Now he is before the court again for stealing two other cell phones, including yours. There is no question whatsoever that this man has offended, and failed to use the resources of the state.”Mr Warner sentenced Lovell to three months’ imprisonment for stealing the BlackBerry, and activated his 18 months’ sentence for the December robbery charge. The two sentences are to run concurrently.
