Man jailed for taking drugs into prison
A 38-year-old man who claimed he accidentally took heroin into Westgate Correctional Facility has been jailed.Dean Edwards, of Marsh Lane, Devonshire, admitted in Magistrates’ Court to possessing 0.5 g of heroin on December 12.The court heard that Edwards had come in through the prison gates to visit his brother when the twist of powder was found in his pocket by a drug-sniffing dog.Subsequently interviewed by police, Edwards said he had bought the heroin earlier in Warwick and had forgotten to leave it behind in his car.He told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner: “It was a lapse of memory. I didn’t want to take it into the facility. I had a lot of things going on in my life, and I forgot.”Mr Warner said: “I’m not satisfied that you didn’t know you had these drugs on you. I am of the view you knowingly intended to take it in.”Edwards was then sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.
