Drink driver in accident was three-times over legal limit
Two men were banned from the road yesterday after they admitted driving drunk.James Trott, 69, and Ricardo Santos, 19, both pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to driving while impaired in separate incidents earlier this year.According to Crown counsel Kirsty-Anne Kiellor, at around 5.15pm on April 16, officers responded to an accident on Middle Road, in Smith’s.When they arrived they found that a car, driven by Trott, had collided with a motorcycle, causing the rider to suffer road rash. The rider told officers that she had been knocked off her bike by Trott, who had attempted to overtake her.Speaking to Trott, officers noted that he smelled of alcohol and asked if he had been drinking. He responded: “I was working on my boat in St David’s and I had four beers.”A breath test later showed he had 250mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, more than triple the legal limit of 80mg.After pleading guilty, Trott apologised to the court, calling the incident a “terrible mistake”.Santos was arrested after a separate incident on Front Street at around 2.40am on May 4.According to Ms Kiellor, officers on mobile patrol in Hamilton saw Santos get on a bike and ride at high speed travelling west on the sidewalk.He then allegedly steered into the road without looking for traffic.Officers pulled Santos over and while speaking with him, noticed that his breath smelled of alcohol. Asked if he had been drinking, he told officers that he had one beer.He agreed to give officers a breath sample, which showed that he had 102mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined both men $1,000 and banned them from driving all vehicles for a one year.
