$1,000 fine for ‘fingernail-sized’ piece of cannabis

A 45-year-old man has paid a hefty fine for a “fingernail-sized” piece of cannabis.Randolph Anthony Simons, 45, was arrested for a separate matter on the morning of January 8 and taken to Hamilton Police Station.In the course of being escorted to jail, Simons was found with a piece of cannabis in his wool hat, later determined to be 0.1 grams of the drug.Simons pleaded guilty, but told Magistrates’ Court: “This plant material was about the size of a fingernail. It must have been in my crash helmet. What’s the street value of that? A dollar?”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $1,000, to be paid in 30 days.
