Women used great-uncle’s bank details to pay rent
A 29-year-old Sandys woman has appeared in Magistrates’ Court for trying to pay her debts with money from a family member’s bank account.Jamesha Valerie Van Lowe, 29, of Malabar Close, pleaded guilty to using a false instrument to collect a cheque, and dishonestly attempting to obtain $8,000 from Gladwin Simons.The court heard that on October 1, Van Lowe attend the St George’s branch of Butterfield Bank and presented a letter purportedly authorising her to collect a manager’s cheque.The bank manager became suspicious after the signature used did not match that on file, and did not authorise cashing the cheque.All other branches were subsequently informed by e-mail of the incident, and when Van Lowe tried to cash the cheque at the Reid Street branch, police were called and the documents seized.Under interview, Van Lowe admitted the offence, telling police she needed the money to pay her rent. She had obtained the account details from her great-uncle’s bank statements.Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered a social inquiry report on Van Lowe. Her bail of $2,000 plus one surety was extended until her sentencing in July.
