Man fined $500 for stealing steak

Leaving a supermarket with a steak hidden in his clothes proved costly for a 49-year-old Devonshire man.On June 11, the manager of the Shopping Centre saw Levi Pemberton place a $5.11 Angus steak down the front of his trousers and leave after purchasing a can of beans.Stopped and searched outside the store, Pemberton offered to pay for the steak, but was prosecuted for theft.Pemberton admitted the offence in Magistrates’ Court, telling Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner: “I was unemployed, and I was very hungry.”Mr Warner countered: “If you were so hungry, you could have just bought hamburger meat.”He fined Pemberton $500, to be paid by July 24.
