Threatening hand gesture leads to a $1,500 fine
A 21-year-old who threatened a taxi driver by gesturing in a shooting motion with his hands was fined $1,500 in Magistrates’ Court.Umdae Woolridge, of Miss Vickey Lane, in St George’s, admitted to using threatening behaviour towards taxi driver Richard Lewis on June 17.Prosecutor Larissa Burgess said around 2.45pm Mr Lewis picked up two male passengers in his vehicle, one being Woolridge. He took the two men to the 24-hour Esso City Tigermart in Hamilton where they all got out and entered the store.Mr Lewis noticed the two men in a dispute with another male and the passengers rushed the driver back into the taxi, telling him: “Come on let’s go. Get in this car. If the police get this car I will f*** you up.”Woolridge also allegedly made a gun gesture to Mr Lewis on his fingers. The offence was reported to police and officers caught up to the two men in a dark area next to a house. The other passenger ran off, but Woolridge was caught and arrested.Duty defence counsel Leo Mills said Woolridge in hindsight had realised the behaviour was wrong, particularly in light of today’s climate.“The gesture he is said to have made to the taxi driver is one that is certain to be called ill advised if anything at all.“There was certainly no real intent to make good on that and perhaps it was more of a case of bravado in the presence of this friend than any real intent to carry out that intention,” said Mr Mills.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said it was “more than an ill advised gesture” and involved Woolridge threatening the taxi driver and refusing to pay the fare.Woolridge also appeared in court for having 1.6 grams of cannabis in his possession on March 22 in an increased penalty zone, namely within 300 metres of Victor Scott Primary. He admitted to the offence and was fined $1,000 for drug possession and an additional $1,500 for it being in an increased penalty zone.
