Man cleared of kidnap charge is seriously hurt in accident
A man who was cleared of armed kidnap charges last week was seriously injured in a road accident early yesterday.Ashley Wellman's motorcycle collided with a wall on Harbour Road in Paget around 4.30am. His mother and friends were at his bedside in the Intensive Care Unit at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital yesterday, where he remained heavily sedated. The accident came just six days after Mr Wellman, 31, from Sandys, was cleared by a jury in relation to an alleged gunpoint kidnap, assault and robbery. He was charged along with two other men, but prosecutors dropped the case after the complainant fled to Jamaica and refused to come back to give evidence. Mr Wellman maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. His mother, who asked not to be named, said yesterday afternoon: “He's still heavily sedated and I've been unable to speak to him. He has some serious injuries.”Referring to the recent case, she said: “It's been very difficult. There was 19 months waiting for the trial, and then it's all over, and then a few days later he's in the ICU.”Mr Wellman's mother does not know how the accident happened, and was notified of it by a friend. She was being supported yesterday by other friends and family members who joined her at the hospital.Mr Wellman was listed in stable condition in the ICU according to a hospital spokeswoman.A police spokesman said motorists were diverted away from the location of the collision while investigators examined the scene.Police did not name Mr Wellman in their press release, but his mother gave permission for us to do so in this report.Inquiries are ongoing, and anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has information about it should contact Pc Rawle Massiah on 295-0011.
