Impaired driver sentenced

A 27-year-old Pembroke man was banned from driving for three years after admitting his second drunk driving offence in a matter of months.Tyrone Sampson was additionally sentenced to three months in prison for failing to pay fines relating to his last drunk driving conviction.Crown counsel Susan Mulligan said earlier this week in Magistrates; Court that officers on duty on Crow Lane saw a motorcycle, ridden by Sampson, travel down Corkscrew Hill and onto East Broadway without stopping around 3am on October 1.The officers directed Sampson to pull over but he instead swerved away from them into the opposite lane, nearly striking a taxi.He then started to make his way around Crow Lane roundabout in the wrong direction, before he turned onto The Lane.Sampson then attempted to turn onto Trimingham Hill at high speed, but lost control and crashed the vehicle. Officers then watched as he attempted to hide in some nearby bushes. He later told officers he tried to escape because he had outstanding warrants.A breathalyser test produced a reading of 161mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood double the legal limit of 80mg.It was also discovered that Sampson was driving while disqualified, having been suspended for two years in July for impaired driving. He had previously been convicted of impaired driving in 2008.Sampson yesterday pleaded guilty to both driving while impaired and driving while disqualified. He apologised to the court, saying he had been involved in an argument with his girlfriend and she had thrown him out of the house.“She told me to get my stuff and go. She was going to take my bike too,” he said. “I couldn’t stop for the officers because I had a big bag of clothes in my hand.”He also told the court that he couldn’t walk the streets because he was afraid of being shot.Noting Sampson had not paid his previous fines relating to his last conviction of impaired driving, Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said: “I can solve all those problems for you people shooting at you and having nowhere to stay.”Mr Tokunbo sentenced Sampson to three months’ imprisonment for the July matter. He also disqualified Sampson from driving all vehicles for 36 months for the most recent offence, and gave him a three-month suspended sentence.
