Smoking cure ends up costing $2,000

A retired US doctor got more than he bargained for after a hemp mixture that helped him quit smoking cost him $2,000 in Magistrates’ Court.New Jersey resident Charles Emile Reisen was a passenger on board the Norwegian Gem when Customs officers found eight grams of plant material in his cabin.The 62-year-old told Magistrate Juan Wolffe that it was a herbal preparation he’d purchased legally in the US.Crown counsel Larissa Burgess said officers and members of the ship’s security found two metal canisters and a pipe inside the cabin’s safe on October 5.Reisen was arrested later that day.Duty counsel Kamal Worrell told the court: “This was a herbal mixture, prepared pharmaceutically, in order to alleviate the cravings for nicotine.”Reisen said he purchased the mixture in Colorado, using his medical card. “I haven’t had a cigarette since,” he said, adding: “It was very expensive.“My intent was not to become intoxicated; my intent was to preserve my lungs.”Reisen pleaded guilty to a charge of simple possession, and was ordered to pay his fine forthwith.
