Homeless man jailed for burglaries
A homeless man was sent to jail after he admitted stealing more than $7,000 in cash and items.Sonny Bell, 49, pleaded guilty last month to two counts of burglary items valued at $5,500 were taken from Paraquet Restaurant in Paget and $2,630 was taken from Bermuda Air Conditioning (BAC) in Pembroke.Magistrates’ Court heard that Paraquet cleaning staff contacted police after discovering a man-sized hole in the dining room’s drywall ceiling around 6.30am on August 24.Items removed from the restaurant included cigarettes, a credit card machine and a point-of-sale computer.A DVR machine, which recorded footage from the restaurant’s CCTV cameras, was also missing, but later found outside the restaurant with recordings intact.Five days later BAC staff discovered that the company’s Mill Creek office had been broken into and cash taken.CCTV footage recorded the previous night showed a man on the property trying to mask his face with a handkerchief and an umbrella.Bell was arrested in a home on The Glebe Road. A search of the premises found a bag containing clothes that matched those worn by the BAC burglar, and Magistrates’ Court paperwork in Bell’s name.Bell apologised to the court saying he would like to have another opportunity to appear in drug court.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner sentenced Bell to six months’ imprisonment for each offence, with the sentences to run concurrently.He also ordered that the period of incarceration be followed by two years’ probation, with Bell ordered to undergo all rehabilitation programs deemed necessary by Court Services.
