Man denies injuring police officer with car
A man accused of hitting a police inspector with a car while trying to evade arrest on Friday has been charged in court.Aswad Wilson, 27, is alleged to have accelerated the vehicle towards Inspector Troy Glasgow, 46, who suffered an arm injury when it struck him.The officer, who is a 19-year police veteran, remained in hospital yesterday after undergoing surgery.Mr Wilson, a construction worker and father of an 11-month-old child, was charged at Magistrates’ Court with committing assault in a bid to resist arrest and escaping lawful custody.In a press release, a Police spokesman said: “Around 9pm on Friday, October 14, police responded to a reported domestic incident at a St Mary’s Road, Warwick residence.“While at the scene, officers became aware that an outstanding warrant was in effect for one of the individuals involved, a 27-year-old Warwick man. When the officers informed the Warwick man of the outstanding warrant and placed him under arrest, he fled on foot.“The escapee was later seen in the vicinity getting into a silver car which accelerated away. A police officer was standing in the path of the vehicle and despite jumping out of the way, was struck and injured as the car left the area.”The spokesman added: “As a result, a search warrant was conducted at a Spice Berry Lane, Warwick residence around 7.45am on Saturday, October 15. The suspect was located in the home and arrested.”Mr Wilson, from Warwick, pleaded not guilty to the charges during his brief appearance at Magistrates’ Court yesterday morning. Prosecutor Cindy Clarke did not give any details about the case, and Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded Mr Wilson into custody until December, when he is due to stand trial.Insp Glasgow was promoted to the rank of Inspector in January and is married with one daughter. He is described on the police service website as an avid sportsman who is a former Bermuda record holder for the high jump and represented the Island at the 1987 Pan-American Games.His police colleagues are continuing to search for the vehicle used in the incident, which is believed to be a Subaru J10.
