Woman fined, banned from driving for six months after resisting arrest

A 25-year-old Pembroke woman admitted racing away from police and struggling to escape handcuffs following a traffic stop.Zurai Scott pleaded guilty to charges of resisting arrest and obstructing an officer on Sunday, as well as traffic offences including driving a vehicle without third party insurance.Magistrates’ Court heard that on Sunday, officers on mobile patrol stopped Scott after seeing her disobey traffic signs at the corner of Court Street and North Street, making the corner without slowing or stopping. She was said to be immediately irate and drove away while officers were attempting to issue her a ticket causing the officers to take evasive action to avoid being struck. The officers were unable to follow her, but later attended her apartment to arrest her for obstructing police. After noticing her car parked diagonally across two parking spaces outside her apartment building, the officers went to her door where she allegedly greeted them with profanities. The officers then attempted to arrest her, but Scott resisted, at one point getting her left hand out of the handcuffs and waving it away from officers.Appearing in court in custody, Scott admitted resisting arrest and obstructing officers, but denied that she had at any point failed to obey a traffic sign, a charge that was dropped by prosecutors. She said she was sorry for the incident, explaining that she needed a car to get safely to and from work, but couldn’t afford to get the vehicle insured.“I’m under a lot of stress right now financially,” she said. “I just got my car up and running. It’s been difficult finding a way home.”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner however said that if she couldn’t afford to keep her car insured, she couldn’t afford to drive in Bermuda.“What if you struck someone’s child or car?” he said. “There is a very good reason why at least you should be insured. What concerns me is it seems you think it’s all right to do that.”Mr Warner fined Scott $400 for obstructing the officers and convicted her of violently resisting arrest, but chose to issue no further sentence on that charge. However, he fined Scott a total of $1,850 for driving an unlicensed vehicle, driving without a seat belt and driving a vehicle without third party insurance, banning her from driving all vehicles for a period of six months.
