Elderly woman had bank account plundered, court hears

An elderly woman had her bank account plundered of more than $21,000 by a woman now charged in court, prosecutors allege.Helene Sutcliffe, of Wellington Back Road, St George’s, is alleged to have forged letters of authorisation in order to steal the funds from 76-year-old Mildred Joan Smith.According to the charges, she presented letters claiming to be from Ms Smith to Butterfield Bank on five different occasions between March and July. As a result, she is alleged to have obtained a total of $2158.69 in five separate withdrawals from Ms Smith’s account.Ms Sutcliffe denied 15 charges of dishonestly obtaining money, making a false instrument and using a false instrument when she appeared at Magistrates’ Court yesterday.Prosecutor Kirsty-Ann Kiellor did not give any details relating to the charges. However, according to the electoral roll, the alleged victim and defendant resided at the same address.Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo issued $15,000 bail to the accused who must return to court later this month for a trial date to be fixed.
