Man admits stealing cell phone at gas station
A 28-year-old guest worker who walked off with a cell phone has been fined, and ordered to pay its owner back.Construction worker Joao Santo admitted in Magistrates’ Court to stealing a BlackBerry Torch on September 30.Prosecutor Maria Sofianos told the court that at 10.50pm, Digicel employee Irving Simmons put the phone down on top of a display at the Esso City Tigermarket, in Hamilton.After discovering his phone was missing, Mr Simmons acquired the store’s CCTV footage, which showed Santo taking the phone.Arrested on November 1, Santo initially denied stealing the phone, but changed his story after police showed him the footage.Speaking through a translator, Santo apologised to the court and said he had been “severely intoxicated”. The phone has not been recovered.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Santo $2,000, and gave him 30 days to pay back $700 for the BlackBerry.
