Missionary, 72, charged with carrying gun is granted $100,000 bail
A visiting US missionary charged with carrying a pistol and ammunition in Bermuda has been granted bail of $100,000.Egbert Haywood, 72, of North Carolina, has spent the past week in police custody.Mr Haywood is accused of possessing a .32 calibre gun plus four rounds of ammunition, as well as an offensive weapon an extendable baton in LF Wade International Airport on November 22. Since the charge is indictable, he is not required to make a plea, and his case must go before the Supreme Court.Mr Haywood, who appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday, had been leaving the Island for Canada when he was stopped. According to his lawyer, Saul Froomkin, Mr Haywood had intended to travel on to his mission in Chile.His wife and numerous church associates from overseas were in court as Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner set bail, which must be held in an account to which his lawyer will be trustee.Mr Haywood must return to court on December 8. As a further condition, he must surrender travel documents, and report three times a week to police.
