Man accused of assaulting police officer
A Sandys man who allegedly assaulted a police officer to escape arrest was charged in Magistrates’ Court alongside the friend accused of helping him.Shae Quan Astwood, 27, of Sound View Road, denied the charges.Jahchel Gibson, 18, of Tribe Road Six, Sandys, denied aiding Mr Astwood’s escape from custody.Crown counsel Maria Sofianos said uniformed officers spotted Mr Astwood, who was wanted by police, on Front Street on December 7.A struggle ensued after which Mr Astwood gave an officer a false name and date of birth.Mr Astwood pushed the officer away before he could be handcuffed, and attempted to get on his motorcycle.Ms Sofianos said a member of the public tried to intervene, but was pulled away by Mr Gibson. Both men were arrested.Lawyer Saul Dismont said Mr Gibbons had simply been trying to get his keys from his friend.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner adjourned the matter until January 4, and remanded both men in custody at the Co-ed Facility.
