Second Bermudian admits to heroin plot
Two Bermudian men will be spending Christmas behind bars in New York after admitting to a $3.9 million heroin importation plot.Rudolph Clarke, 41, of Sandys, was detained at John F Kennedy Airport in January 2011 along with fellow Bermudian Kyle John, 52, of Hamilton Parish.John pleaded guilty to the plot earlier this year, and Clarke has now also entered a guilty plea, having initially denied the allegations. The pair remain in custody in New York, and no date for their sentencing has been listed on the court file as yet.According to court documents, the men were travelling back to Bermuda from St Maarten in the Dutch Antilles, via an American Airways flight.During a layover in New York, customs officers stopped John and searched his bags, and discovered a false bottom in his suitcase. They found the heroin, which weighed 1.2 kilograms, when they opened it up.That amount of the drug has a street value of approximately $3,952,000 if sold in individual “decks” on the streets of Bermuda.John told a Homeland Security official after his arrest that Clarke gave him the bag of drugs, and he agreed to carry it in return for a payment of $10,000 at the end of the trip. The men were charged at the United States Eastern District Court of New York. When he pleaded guilty earlier this year to conspiring to import heroin into the United States, John told a judge he had received treatment for cocaine abuse during 2010. He also stated: “I knew I was carrying drugs but I didn’t know what type of drugs.”Clarke pleaded guilty last month to conspiring to import heroin. He entered the plea three days after he was due to stand trial on that charge and three other allegations of importing heroin, conspiring to import heroin with intent to distribute it and possession of heroin with intent to distribute it.
