Two deny conspiracy to kill
Two accused gunmen yesterday denied charges of conspiring to kill Rodney Grimes last October.During an arraignments session in Supreme Court, Pelealkhai Williams, 23, and Jonathan Dill, 28, both pleaded not guilty to conspiring to commit murder and conspiring to commit murder with a firearm.Mr Williams additionally pleaded not guilty to a charge of possessing a prohibited weapon, specifically a firearm with a barrel less than 24in in length, without a permit.Mr Grimes, 24, was shot near Gravity nightclub at around 3am on Saturday, October 8, with one bullet reportedly grazing his ear.Both men were remanded in custody, and are expected to return to Supreme Court on February 1.Also appearing in court was Latvian sailor Janis Zegelis, who denied charges of conspiring to import a 9mm pistol, 192 rounds of ammunition and an unspecified quantity of cocaine on July 21, 2011.He also denied alternate charges of possessing the prohibited items and drugs between July 21 and August 1, 2011.He was arrested following a raid on his yacht, the Artur, which was temporarily moored in St George’s for repairs.The matter is expected to go to Supreme Court trial on May 7 this year.And David Carroll, Lorenzo Lottimore, Craig Hatherley and Loren Marshall also appeared in Supreme Court, denying charges of conspiring to import 397g of diamorphine, better known as heroin, to the Island between a date unknown and June 2.According to the Crown, the street value of the drugs if sold on the streets of Bermuda would be just under $1 million.All four men pleaded not guilty to the charges, and Mr Carroll additionally pleaded not guilty to conspiring to import just under $100,000 of cannabis between a date unknown and January 9, 2011.Chief Justice Richard Ground extended the four men’s bail conditions, and said the matter would return to Supreme Court for a mention at the February arraignments session.Several other matters were mentioned during the session, with sentencing dates set for gunman Noet Barnett and burglar Erskin Phillips.Barnett was found guilty of the attempted murder of Jeremiah Dill, who was shot multiple times on October 4, 2010, on Parson’s Road.The shooting was said to be connected to the ongoing feud between the 42 and Parkside gangs.He is now scheduled to be sentenced on January 30 in Supreme Court.Phillips meanwhile pleaded guilty to breaking in to a Middle Town Lane home armed with a stun gun and attacked neighbour Wayne Wales.During the ensuing struggle, Mr Wales knocked Phillips unconscious. Phillips later ended up in critical condition in the intensive care unit following the incident.According to a relative of the affected residents, Phillips also had in his possession masking tape, a knife, gloves and condoms.Phillips is now scheduled to be sentenced on January 19 in Supreme Court.Also appearing in Supreme Court was David Wayne DeSilva, who stands charged of the murder of Denise Evans-Wilkinson, whose body was discovered in the water off Mill Point Road.Mr DeSilva has pleaded not guilty to the offence. His trial is scheduled to begin in June.
