Man in court on gun charges

A 20-year-old Sandys man was yesterday charged in connection with a shooting incident.Gariko Benjamin was charged in Magistrates’ Court with possessing a firearm, discharging a firearm, taking a vehicle without consent and subsequently driving that vehicle in a dangerous manner in Pembroke on January 25.He was also charged with three counts of using threatening gestures towards police on the same date in Sandys.Because the charges are indictable only and must be heard by the Supreme Court, Mr Benjamin was not required to enter a plea.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded Mr Benjamin until later this week when bail applications are scheduled to be heard.Crown Counsel Cindy Clarke represented the Crown, while lawyer Larry Mussenden represented the defendant.At around 10.30am last Wednesday, police responded to a report of gunshots in the Over View Hill/Mount Hill area of Pembroke. There were no reported injuries in the incident.Following the report, police were involved in a prolonged, high speed chase through the west end, which resulted in Somerset-area schools being placed in lockdown.
