Caught with crack cocaine
A 24-year-old Pembroke man was fined after officers found rocks of crack cocaine in his pocket.Kershon Burt, of North Shore Road, admitted possessing the controlled drug on October 20.Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney told Magistrates’ Court officers on mobile patrol were driving through Pembroke around 7.35pm when they noticed Burt walking.The officers saw Burt look at them, and then place an object in his back left pocket.A search under the Misuse of Drugs Act produced a paper twist containing three smaller twists. Each of the smaller twists contained a white, rocklike substance, later confirmed to be 0.46g of crack cocaine.Duty counsel Leo Mills noted the defendant’s age, his lack of prior convictions, and the small quantity of the drug, and asked for lenience.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Burt $1,000. He ordered him to pay within a month or serve 30 days in prison.
