Teen stole tourist’s handbag in broad daylight
A teenager was remanded in custody after he admitted stealing a tourist’s handbag.Denzil Chase, 18, was on bail awaiting sentence for a similar offence at the time of the theft, Magistrates’ Court heard.Crown counsel Tawana Tannock told the court that Joy Turner, of Silver Springs Maryland, was walking with her sister and father near Crystal Caves when she felt someone pulling on her purse around 1.10pm on April 5.She turned and saw two men on a motorcycle, with the pillion passenger grabbing her bag. The culprit managed to pull the bag away from her and rode off however witnesses noted the vehicle’s licence plate number.The bag contained US cash and an iPod valued at $250.Police were called. A search found two riders on a motorcycle who matched the description of the thieves, riding at high speed on Panorama Drive.The motorcycle struck the police car and both riders fell off.One suspect escaped on foot however Chase, of North Shore Road, Hamilton Parish, was arrested.Officers found $42 in US cash on him. Questioned, he admitted that the money came from the stolen handbag and led the officers to where he and his accomplice dumped it.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded Chase into custody at the Co-Ed Facility until April 12 when he is to return to court to be sentenced on both charges.
