Baby death case moves forward
A woman accused of the manslaughter of a baby at her home day care facility in Pembroke had her case committed to the Supreme Court yesterday.Jennifer Franks, 56, of Hill Crescent, Pembroke, is alleged to have unlawfully killed 18-month-old Nasir Burgess, from Smith’s, on September 9, 2011.She appeared before Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner for a preliminary inquiry hearing yesterday. Mr Warner reviewed exhibits and statements in the case provided by prosecutor Carrington Mahoney.Ms Franks is represented by Saul Froomkin QC. She has not been required to enter a plea to the charge she faces as yet, because it must be dealt with by the Supreme Court.After reviewing the paperwork in the case, Mr Warner committed it to the higher court. Ms Franks must appear there on June 1 at the arraignments session, where she will be required to enter a plea.
