Two men imprisoned after they admitted having stolen alcohol
Two men caught red-handed with a box of stolen booze were jailed this week.Troy Robinson, 44, of Anchorage Lane, St George’s pleaded guilty to handling or receiving stolen goods. His co-accused, 51-year-old Tyrone Ming, of Crane Lane, Pembroke, admitted stealing the alcohol from Tucker’s Point Beach Club.Crown counsel Nicole Smith told Magistrates’ court that at around 12.35pm on April 1 a bartender at the beach club heard the sound of bottles clinking together coming from a room in the back of the building. The room contained a metal cage, which holds bottles of alcohol for the bar. The cage is usually locked by a padlock however the room itself remains open so that people can access the building’s bathroom. When the bartender went to investigate the noises, he found the cage had been damaged. Outside the building, he saw two men wearing black clothes and helmets with dark visors on a motorcycle with a cardboard box.The bartender attempted to stop the suspects, shouting and pushing the pillion passenger, but they rode off.Later that day, police attended a Smith’s home where they saw two men, identified as Robinson and Ming, on a motorcycle. The pair were wearing clothes matching the Tucker’s Point suspects and carrying a cardboard box containing bottles of alcohol. Both men ran upon seeing the officers. Ming ran into the home and was arrested.Asked about the offence he said: “It wasn’t me. It was Troy Robinson.”Robinson was arrested in connection with the matter later that day.A search of the cardboard box revealed $355.80 of alcohol, including four bottles of Dewars whiskey, four bottles of Absolut vodka, two bottles of Absolut Citron, one bottle of Grey Goose vodka, one bottle of Malibu and one bottle of Cockspur. The bottles were later identified as being the same type stolen from the beach club.Yesterday Ming said he was sorry for the offence. He said he was only trying to get a lift and got “caught up”.Robinson also apologised, saying he didn’t steal the bottles or even enter the building. He said he received a phone call that morning asking him to pick up a box from outside the beach club, not knowing its contents.“I saw the box where the person said it would be, I put it on my bike and at that moment the bartender came. He shouted, but I thought nothing of it,” Robinson said. “I never broke no cage. I know nothing about it.”Robinson further told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that police have been harassing him, but the magistrate responded: “Yes, because you’re a thief.”Elaborating, Mr Warner noted Robinson’s long list of prior offences, including periods of incarceration for burglary, receiving stolen goods, prowling, unlawfully wounding and assaulting police. The magistrate sentenced Robinson to 12 months’ imprisonment, with time served taken into account. However Mr Warner noted that, unlike Robinson, Ming had not been convicted of any offences for a prolonged period of time and sentenced him to 30 days’ imprisonment with time served.
