Man fined for threating to kill girlfriend
A Pembroke man was ordered to pay more than $2,000 in Magistrates’ Court yesterday after he admitted holding a hot iron to his girlfriend’s face and threatening to kill her.Shaki Weeks, 33, entered guilty pleas to a charge of threatening behaviour and wilfully causing unlawful damage on April 26. Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney told the court that Weeks went to pick up his four-year-old son.A verbal dispute ensued with the child’s mother, Renee Williams, who was ironing clothes at the time of the incident. “The defendant grabbed the hot iron and held it five inches from her face and said ‘I would punch you in your face, I would kill you’,” said Mr Mahoney.The complainant was able to lock the apartment door at one point. Mr Mahoney said: “Weeks broke down the door which had to be replaced, the complainant ran out of the house through another door with her two children.”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered Weeks to pay a total of $2,223 by the end of the day or spend 30 days in jail in default. He was fined $1,000 for threatening behaviour, $500 for causing damage and ordered to pay $723 for the door he damaged.His lawyer, Michaela Clamens asked if Weeks could have time to pay. Mr Warner replied: “The door can’t stay open, the landlord had to go in his pocket to fix it so he has to go in his pocket and pay today.”
