Contractor tells jury he was paid to work at defendants’ home
A contractor told a court alleged fraudster Kyril Burrows paid him thousands of dollars to carry out work at his home.Steve Wilson, the first cousin of Mr Burrows’ co-accused wife Delcina Bean-Burrows, said he was hired two years ago to work at their house at Turkey Hill, St George’s, which is at the centre of a long-running fraud trial. The jury has previously seen paperwork showing how a different construction worker, John White of J&M Construction, was allegedly paid taxpayers’ money to renovate the private property in 2006, when Mr Burrows was a buildings manager for Works and Engineering. On the second day of his defence yesterday, Mr Burrows called Mr Wilson as a witness, and produced documents showing he had paid him with his own cash.Mr Wilson, who said his work was billed to “Kyril Burrows”, told the court he was on the property in March and April 2010, noting “there was a few things I needed to correct and work on”.Also yesterday, Mr Burrows called truck owner William Malpas, who said he delivered a cement mixer to the property in February 2010.Mr Malpas also said he was paid in cash for his services, and showed the court a receipt.Mr Burrows, 48, and Mrs Bean-Burrows, 49, are accused of defrauding Government of more than $553,000 between them. The prosecution claims J&M Construction was paid as if it had been working on public buildings such as schools and post offices, when really it was working at Turkey Hill.Mr Burrows is also accused of abusing his position in Works and Engineering to use purchase orders to buy goods for his home. And prosecutors say the pair directed public cash into Mrs Bean-Burrows’ businesses for work that was never carried out.Yesterday, Mr Burrows called another witness, Leola Stovell, of the Bermuda Broadcasting Company, who said she was present for the opening of one of Mrs Bean-Burrows’ stores, Triangle Toner. After being shown a photograph from that day, Ms Stovell noted others in attendance included her BBC colleague Keevil Burgess, United Bermuda Party politician Kim Swan and former Mayor of St George’s Maria Caisey.Mr and Mrs Burrows deny 35 charges between them from 2005 to 2009, covering allegations of cheating, obtaining money and property by false deception, money laundering and false accounting. The case continues.
