Man hit with $1,000 fine for having 13 grams of cannabis
A man who claimed he had 13g of cannabis because it was his birthday was given the unpleasant gift of a fine in court.Vincent Darrell, 35, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to possessing cannabis on August 19, 2011 in Smith's.Crown counsel Garrett Byrne told the court that officers stopped Darrell as he was driving his car around 8pm that day for a search.Darrell denied having any illegal drugs in the vehicle however officers found two hand-rolled cigarettes containing cannabis in the glove compartment.A search of his home produced ten grams of the controlled drug. Darrell admitted the drugs were his and for his personal use.Officers seized 13.11g of the controlled drug from Darrell's home and vehicle.Yesterday Darrell apologised to the court.“It was my birthday. I was having a good time. I realise my mistake,” he said.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $1,000.When Darrell then asked for time to pay, Mr Warner responded: “If you have got enough money to buy this quantity of weed for your birthday, you should have enough now to pay this fine, knowing what the consequences are.”Mr Warner ordered that the fine be paid within one month.
