Officers fired Taser at man threatening them with metal pipe
A man who threatened officers with a metal pipe outside Magistrates’ Court has been convicted of multiple charges, including having an offensive weapon.Allan Robinson, 52, pleaded not guilty at an earlier hearing to charges of threatening behaviour, possessing an offensive weapon, violently resisting arrest and assaulting an officer in an incident last week. However, during his trial on Monday the court heard that at around 10am on June 21, two officers were on duty outside the Dame Lois Browne-Evans building on Court Street when they saw Robinson drive past.As he went by, Robinson shouted something at the officers which neither could make out. He then performed a u-turn and drove past the officers again, shouting: “Leave my people alone.”He then performed a second u-turn, parked the vehicle, and produced a large metal pipe. Holding the pipe, Robinson came towards the officers shouting: “You want some of me?”The officers warned Robinson to put the pipe down, but he instead lifted the pipe over his head as if to strike the officers.Robinson was then shot with a Taser, causing him to drop the pipe.Police attempted to handcuff Robinson but he continued to struggle, kicking one officer in her leg before eventually being restrained by three officers.During the trial, Robinson did not cross examine any of the Crown witnesses and declined the option to testify in his own defence. However his brother briefly addressed the court, saying the behaviour described during the trial was completely out of character for the defendant.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner found Robinson guilty of all four counts and ordered that a social inquiry report be carried out on the defendant.Mr Warner remanded Robinson into custody until August 15, when he is expected to return to Magistrates’ Court for sentencing.
