Gunman’s sentencing delayed

Admitted gunman Pelealkhai Williams shot a Devonshire man from behind on the orders of his fellow gang members, Supreme Court heard yesterday.Williams, 23, pleaded guilty in April to wounding 25-year-old Rodney Grimes with intent to cause grievous bodily harm on October 9 last year. He also admitted conspiring to use a firearm to commit an indictable offence.Johnathan Dill, 28, pleaded guilty to being an accessory in the attack after the fact for helping Williams escape the scene.Both men appeared in court again yesterday for sentencing.Crown Counsel Cindy Clarke told the court that at around 12.45am on October 8, the victim walked into the Gravity Nightclub on North Shore, where Williams and Dill were hanging out with members of the 42 gang.Williams left the nightclub and returned with a firearm. At around 3.09am, Mr Grimes was leaving the bar when Williams approached him from behind, pointed the firearm at the back of the victim’s head and fired.Mr Grimes dropped to the ground, bleeding profusely, while Williams ran to Dill, who was waiting with a motorcycle. The pair then drove off in a westerly direction.The victim was taken to hospital and treated for a bullet wound to right ear and a laceration to his left ear.Williams was arrested at on October 9 and tests revealed multiple particles of gun shot residue on his person.In a subsequent interview with police, Williams admitted shooting Mr Grimes, telling officers that he was a member of the 42 gang, and had been instructed by other gang members to shoot the victim.Dill admitted to officers that he was at the nightclub on the evening that the shooting took place, but said he and his wife had left on a mini bus before the incident happened.However CCTV footage showed him in the area at 3.10am picking up Williams following the shooting and driving away from the area.Both men pleaded guilty to the offences in April.Ms Clarke told the court that both men have multiple previous convictions, and had suspended sentences hanging over their heads at the time of the shooting.She recommended that, in all the circumstances, Williams should be sentenced to a total of between 12 and 14 years in prison for shooting Mr Grimes, while Dill should serve between 16 months and two years for his involvement.The matter is scheduled to return to the Supreme Court on Thursday so that the court can hear from defence lawyers Shade Subair and Craig Attridge, representing Williams and Dill respectively.
