Man fined $2,000 for 5.38 grams of cannabis in increased penalty zone

A 37-year-old Devonshire man was ordered to pay a heavy fine of $2,000 in Magistrates’ Court yesterday for possessing four bags of cannabis in an increased penalty zone.Worrell Bean of Cedar Park was arrested near Prospect Primary School on the night of March 17, after he was spotted on a motorcycle with no helmet.He told the court after pleading guilty that he was in his yard, and “decided to jump on the bike to go to another apartment nearby”.“I’m very sorry, I had a few problems on my head,” he said.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner replied: “I don’t want to hear all of that, your problem is that you won’t stop possessing drugs,” before citing the defendant’s long history of offences involving cannabis.The four bags found by police during the search amounted to 5.38 grams of the controlled drug.Mr Warner fined the Bean $1,000 for the drugs and another $1,000 for possessing the cannabis in an increased penalty zone to be paid by August 18.* This story has been edited to correct an incorrect headline.
